Supreme Chess

Xie Jun

Xie Jun was born on October 30, 1970 in Beijing, China. She became junior Xiangqi (Chinese chess) champion of Beijing at the age of six. In 1991, she won the women's world championship by defeating Maya Chiburdanidze, who had held the title since 1978.

Jun successfully defended the title against Nava Ioseliani in 1993, but lost it in 1996 to Zsuzsa Polgar. In 1999, FIDE controversially stripped Polgar of her title and Jun was able to win her title back by defeating Alisa Galliamova. FIDE changed the format of the world championship to a knock-out system in 2000 and Jun won the title again by beating fellow Chinese player Qin Kanying in the final.

Xie Jun has never been ranked number one in the world among women by FIDE despite her achievements. Judit Polgar, who refuses to play in women-only events, holding that place for as long as Xie has been playing at the top level. Jun was an important factor when the Chinese women's team won the gold medal in the 1998 Chess Olympiad in Elista.
