Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu
Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu was born on August 1, 1976 in Romania. He is noted for his risky, almost paradoxical play. In 1999, he defeated Vasily Ivanchuk in the quarterfinals of the FIDE World Chess Championship. In July of 2005, he won the European Individual Championship in Warsaw, scoring 10 points out of 13 games, and finishing a half point ahead of runner-up Teimour Rajabov from Azerbaijan.
In April of 2006, Nisipeanu played Veselin Topalov, the FIDE World Champion, in a four game match. Topalov won by a score of 3-1. This match was not for any official title. On the October 2005 FIDE rating list, he had an ELO rating of 2707, making him the top Romanian player and number 15 in the world.
