Antoaneta Stefanova

Antoaneta Stefanova was born on April 19, 1979 in Sofia, Bulgaria. Her father taught her to play chess when she was just four years old. By the age of seven, she had become a Sofia champion. In 1989, she won the world chess title for kids in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico and later that year also won the under-14 Czech Championship.

Since turning 13, Stefanova has played in five Chess Olympiads for Bulgaria, starting in Manila, the Phillipines. In 1997, her FIDE rating jumped into the top ten of women worldwide, and she earned the title of Grandmaster in June 2003. This title is held by only ten other women. In 2004, she won the Women's World Chess Championship in a 64-player knockout tournament held in Elista, Kalmykia. On the April 2005 FIDE rating list, she had a rating of 2495, ranking her 7th in the world among active female players.
