Alexandra Kosteniuk was born on April 23, 1984 in Perm, Russia. In 2004, she became female European Champion by winning the tournament in Dresden, Germany. In November 2004, she earned her International Grandmaster title, becoming only the 11th woman ever to receive the highest title awarded by FIDE, the World Chess Federation. She is also a Woman Grandmaster and International Master.
In 2005, Kosteniuk won the Russian Women's Championship. The tournament was held from May 14 to 26 in Samara, Russia. She became vice-champion of the world at the Women's World Championship in Moscow of 2001.
Kosteniuk's mantras have been "chess is cool" and "beauty and intelligence can go together". With these as a backdrop, Kosteniuk has been promoting chess in the capacity of a fashion model in order to spark interest in the game around the world. She is also the host of a popular weekly podcast "Chess is Cool". On the April 2006 FIDE women ELO rating list, she is third with a rating of 2540.
