Alexander Morozevich was born on July 18, 1977 in Russia. He is noted for using unusual openings. He has often played the Chigorin Defense (1. d4 d5 2. c4 Nc6) against the Queen's Gambit, and more recently the Albin Countergambit (d4 d5 2. c4 e5). Both systems are hardly ever seen at the top level of play. He is also well known for preferring complicated rather than clear positions.
At the 2000 Chess Olympiad, Morozevich won a Bronze Medal with a score of 7.5/10, and gaining the highest ELO performance rating at 2803.7. He score 7/11 at the 2002 Olympiad against considerably weaker opposition, for a performance rating of 2663. At the Amber tournament in 2002, he finished in first place in the combined blindfold and rapid standings with a score of 15/22. The next year in the same event, he finished tied for 2nd with a score of 13.5/22. He defeated Vladimir Kramnik in both his games, and the next year in the same event, they both tied for 1st place with 14.5/22 points.
At Beil 2003, Morozevich finished in 1st place with 8/10, and the next year 1st place with 7.5/10. In the 2003 Russian Championship, he finished tied for 1st with Peter Svidler, although Svidler took the title with a better tie-break score. In September 2005, he played for the World Chess Championship title. He took fourth place behind Veselin Topalov, Vishwanathan Anand and Peter Svidler. On the April 2006 FIDE rating list, he had an ELO rating of 2730, making him number seven in the world.
